Our country has plenty of iron-ore under the ground, butin the old days who had no mills to produce steel. So the ore was sent to other countries. Our steel industry started even before the five year plans but it was not large enough to meet the needs of our country. We need a lot of steelfor machinesin our factories, for weapon for our army andfor many other things that we manufacturefor our use. So the government had big steel mills builtin Bhilai. Durgapur and Rourkela and a few more are going to be built under the coming five year plan.
But it is not easy to build steel mills we need engineers to build them and crores and crores of rupees. We dont have all the engineers that we need, nor enough money. So men who have built steel mills in other countries have come to help us to build them. We are grateful to friendly countries for all the help they are giving us.
